Hyaluronic Acid is the one ingredient sworn by dermatologists, skincare experts, and beauty enthusiasts alike. It is renowned for its ability to attract and bind up to 1000 times its weight in water.
However, a common complaint is that some hyaluronic acid serums feel sticky, sit on top of the skin, or ironically, make the skin feel drier over time. The solution to this paradox lies in understanding molecular weights and application techniques.
## The Importance of Molecular Weight
Hyaluronic acid molecules come in different sizes. High molecular weight HA is too large to penetrate the skin barrier. Instead, it sits on the surface, forming an invisible film that prevents water loss while instantly plumping fine lines. This gives you that immediate "glass skin" look.
Low molecular weight HA, however, is small enough to penetrate deeper into the epidermis. It provides lasting hydration from within and helps signal the skin to repair itself.

## The "Damp Skin" Rule
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant—a water magnet. If you apply it to a completely dry face in a dry climate, it will draw moisture from the only place it can: the deeper layers of your own skin, pulling it to the surface where it evaporates. This is why HA can sometimes cause dryness.
To prevent this, you must always apply Hyaluronic Acid to slightly damp skin. Spritzing a hydrating toner or thermal water before application gives the HA molecules external water to grab onto and pull into your skin.
## Sealing the Deal
Finally, humectants must be sealed. After your HA serum has absorbed, you must apply an occlusive or emollient moisturizer to trap the hydration inside your skin. Without this physical barrier, the water will simply evaporate into the air.
